Chaos at HEB: South Austin saw people fighting over discarded food

Yesterday people were seen fighting over food in a dumpster at a HEB store in South Austin on William Cannon and I-35.

Witnesses say employees saw employees throw away meat and other perishables after a power outage at the store.

Someone posted on social media that the store has free food.

Travis County 4 Constable George Morales says more than 250 people came to HEB and fought over the discarded food.

Austin deputies and police arrived to reduce traffic due to the mail.

The products taken from the trash cans were posted on various “Free in Austin” Facebook pages.

Morales says if you or someone you know picked up these foods, throw them away. They are not safe to eat.
