Changes to Starbucks Rewards Program Going Into Effect Monday – What You Need to Know

Attention to regular Starbucks customers. The number of “stars” required to receive certain food and beverages for free in the US and Canada through the coffee giant’s rewards program will officially change on Monday.

When Starbucks Rewards members spend money through their online account, they can earn stars, including two stars per dollar from a Starbucks card and one per dollar from a credit or debit card. They can use these stars to redeem rewards like free drinks and merchandise, depending on how much they have.

An update to the Starbucks rewards program announced in December includes an increase in the number of stars required to redeem items at three different levels. The changes will take effect February 13.

Under these changes, customers need to earn 100 stars in order to receive:

    Hot coffee, hot brewed tea, and baked goods only needed 50 stars to redeem in the past. Meanwhile, the number of stars to get free brewed iced coffee, brewed iced tea and packaged snack is reduced by 50 stars.

    According to the new changes, 200 stars can be exchanged for:

      In the past, shoppers could get a hand-made drink like a latte or a hot breakfast like oatmeal for as little as 150 stars.

      Customers who earn 300 stars can receive:

        Packaged foods could previously be exchanged for 200 stars. The packaged coffee, however, fell from 400 stars.

        Customers who achieve 400 stars can receive a branded mug, drink glass or coffee products of their choice for free. Any items over $20 can be redeemed by paying the difference between the price and the $20 bonus.

        The lowest and highest reward tiers will have no change in point requirements, remaining at 25 and 400 stars, respectively. At the 25 star level, customers can receive a drink modifier such as an extra espresso or syrup.
