Central Florida Dragon Parade dancing on Mills 50

ORLANDO, Florida. “It was a big celebration on Sunday morning as hundreds of people took to the 11th annual Central Florida Dragon Parade at Mills 50 in Orlando.

From dancers to great music, the parade celebrated Asian culture and showcased their many traditions, as well as celebrating the Lunar New Year.

Agnes Chau is the president of Youth Enrichment and Senior Services (YESS) and helped organize the parade along with the Mills 50 and other organizations.

“This year of the rabbit, we will start with prosperity, health and good luck,” Chau said. “We are Asian Americans, but we always want to be part of a community, a larger community, including our culture.”

For Simon Choi, vice president and CEO of payments company ADP, the annual parade is personal. Born and raised in Malaysia, he said it means so much to him to see his culture celebrated and revered right here in Central Florida.

“This is very important to me,” Choi said. “We (ADP) are also the title sponsor. We just want to be part of that community and just give back.”

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and other local elected leaders took part in Sunday’s celebrations, including Orlando City Commissioner Patty Sheehan, who works in part of the area where the parade took place.

“Now more than ever it is important to realize that we are better together. We are stronger when we unite,” Sheehan said. “It goes to show that we welcome inclusive and decent people.”
