Celebrating Women’s History Month in San Antonio

Here in the city of Alamo, there are several events dedicated to this month.

SAN ANTONIO – March is Women’s History Month, celebrating and encouraging the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.

The month began simply as a day, International Women’s Day on March 8th. President Jimmy Carter then established Women’s History Week in the first week of March, and in 1987 it was extended for an entire month. International Women’s Day is still celebrated on March 8th. .

Here in the city of Alamo, several events take place during March. Take a look at the chronological list below, and if you have other events to add to the list, please send an email to [email protected].

International Women’s Day Summit

The Mayor’s Commission on the Status of Women will hold International Women’s Day Summit: For Justice in San Antonio Saturday, March 4 at St. Philip’s College at the GJ Sutton Learning Center. This free event will feature sessions and fact sheets on women’s health, mental health, economic opportunity and advancement of women, and support services for domestic violence and intimate partner violence. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

Let’s Create: Art Comes and Goes

In honor of Women’s History Month, SAPL is celebrating an honored tradition of quilt making. Join us as we create paper quilt patterns using colored construction paper. Come and go crafts are designed to be both make and take activities. Younger children may need help with crafts.

Women’s History Month Film: “Black Panther, Wakanda Forever”

Angela Bassett was nominated for the 2023 Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in Black Panther, Wakanda Forever. The film was also nominated for Best Costume Design, Makeup & Hair Design, and Music (Original Song) – all of which have female nominees. We will watch this film and the other two nominees until the Oscars on March 12, 2023.

Screening of the film “Women’s History Month”: “By gender”

The true story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, her fight for equal rights and the early cases in her historic career that led to her appointment and confirmation as an Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

The Ghost Light Society, a membership of the Tobin Center for Young Professionals, hosts a group of women leaders and storytellers in San Antonio in honor of National Women’s History Month.

Women in Nuclear and Homeland Security

The Truman Homeland Security Project and its Texas chapter, TruTX, will host a virtual community event to recognize women leaders in nuclear and homeland security. The event will raise the voice and experience of women and shed light on careers for college-aged women.

This panel will serve as a preview of a larger two-day event in the fall that will include workshops, networking opportunities, and direct access and interaction with the Truman community both nationally and locally.

Watcha Film Series: “Latin Spring”

A curated showcase of inspiring short films by Hispanic and Indigenous filmmakers dedicated to San Antonio artists and filmmakers, including Esmeralda Hernandez, Bianca Martinez, Sara Tigerina, Guillermina Zabala, and Corpus Christi native Sharon Arteaga. Includes selections from the 8th Annual Official Latin American Film and Arts Festival. Presented in partnership with MonteVideo.

Exhibition Mujeres de Aztlan

Through this annual exhibition, Centro Cultural Aztlan aims to highlight women artists working to advance their careers and expand their artistic expression.

This year, the exhibition and floricanto will focus on the social issues women face, including reproductive justice, working conditions, access, identity and other topical issues of today. We’ve selected artwork that speaks to the experiences, struggles, roles and contributions of women as creators, supporters, change makers, educators and more.
