The Riordan Crusaders won part of the Western Catholic Athletic League (WCAL) Tuesday night, and a freshman from Cameroon made the people of San Francisco proud for decades.

The 66-54 away win over the Sacred Heart Cathedral Fightin’ Irish marked the 15th time the Crusaders had won even a fraction of the league crown, and one of the biggest contributors to that victory didn’t even live in the United States. a year ago.

6-foot-3 freshman guard Andrew Hilman shone again with 11 points and nine rebounds as Riordan (19-5, 12-2 WCAL) won an 11th straight game against Fightin’ Irish to secure a league-sharing league with Mitty ( 20-4, 12-2).

Four points behind at the end of the third, Hilman hit the game-breaker and then dunked Jasir Rencher on the other end. His assist from Rencher’s three-pointer gave the visiting Crusaders a 55–47 lead in the fourth quarter, and his offensive rebound from a missed last-minute free throw resulted in a layup by Zachary Jones, who effectively closed the game.

“As the season went on, he became more comfortable on the pitch in terms of possession and speed of play,” Curtin said.

Achilles Woodson scored 18 points for the Crusaders with a 3-pointer with 4.8 seconds left in the third quarter to give Riordan the lead for good. The visitors also scored the first seven points in the fourth quarter, with Kaia Berridge hitting a 3-pointer and Christian Wise hitting a pair of field shots.

Sacred Heart Cathedral (13-11, 7-7) trailed just 52-47 after Jerry Mixon Jr. made a layup and passed Michael Manfrede from the bottom of the basket, but Hilman passed to Rencher on the other end to restore momentum for Riordan .

Mixon led all players with 19 points and six assists. He gave Zemory Erfe for a 3-pointer to give the Irish a 35–32 lead in the third quarter, and Erfe knocked another off Fed Purnell’s serve to make it 38–34. Mixon answered Rencher’s bucket with two more points to make it 40-36 before Hillman reversed momentum.

Rencher scored 15 points for the Crusaders and Wise finished with nine points and eight rebounds.

“I am very proud that this group has taken first place in the standings, especially with four comebacks and five newcomers,” Curtin said. “WCAL is a chore, and with champions or not, it’s very difficult.”

A third fight against Mitty, who created a tie for first place by defeating the Crusaders last Tuesday, could be heading into the Central Coast Section (CCS) Open Division playoffs.

“A third match would be good, especially with the fans, but we are focused on Friday night and those in our pool,” Curtin said.

The eight teams in the open division are divided into two groups of four teams each. Seeds numbered 1, 4, 5, and 8 are in Group A, and seeds numbered 2, 3, 6, and 7 are in Group B. The top seed hosts every game in the pool, and the winners of each group advance to the championship in February. 24 at the Leavey Center at Santa Clara University.

The Irish, who have scored 12 points from Miller and eight from Manfreda, also expect to get into the open division.
