California’s New Laws Effective July 1
California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken swift action by signing emergency legislation that grants an exemption to restaurants from a newly enacted law prohibiting “junk fees,” scheduled to go into effect on Monday. One of the significant laws set to be enforced is the “No Roofies Law,” which mandates that bars and nightclubs must now furnish date-rape testing kits for their patrons. Additionally, these establishments are obligated to display signage alerting customers to the availability of these kits, marking a proactive measure to enhance safety and security within the nightlife scene.
Another notable regulation pertains to rental security deposits, where a new provision offers added protection for tenants by limiting the amount landlords can request as security. Under this law, any fresh rental agreement can only require a maximum of one month’s deposit, with pre-existing contracts featuring larger deposits remaining unaffected. Landlords retain the prerogative to seek supplementary fees at the lease’s conclusion, provided that any damages surpass the equivalent of one month’s deposit.
Furthermore, the implementation of the Right to Repair law signifies a pivotal shift in consumer rights, particularly concerning electronic devices. This statute mandates that manufacturers must furnish customers or repair establishments with essential components, tools, and instructions necessary for servicing or fixing electronic gadgets. The ambit of this law encompasses cellphones exceeding a $50 threshold, as well as household appliances, televisions, and video recording equipment, heralding a new era of transparency and accountability in product maintenance.
