California Senator Dianne Feinstein hospitalized with shingles

LOS ANGELES (AP) — California Democratic Senator Dianne Feinstein — the oldest member of Congress — said Thursday that she has been hospitalized in San Francisco and is being treated for shingles.

The six-term senator, who turns 90 in June, said in a three-sentence statement released by her office that she was diagnosed last month and hopes to make a full recovery.

“I hope to return to the Senate at the end of this month,” she said.

Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash that can appear anywhere on the body, according to the Mayo Clinic website. It is not life threatening.

Feinstein, who took office in 1992, recently announced that she would not seek re-election in 2024. In recent years, the senator has faced questions about her cognitive health and memory, though she has defended her effectiveness.
