Burglary rate in Austin remains stable for 2 years

The Austin Police Department released video of three suspects involved in multiple burglaries in downtown Austin.

In the video, you can see them entering the elevator with a lot of luggage, and before exiting the elevator, the suspects look directly into the camera.

Police said the burglaries occurred between November 17 and December 28 in downtown Austin.

FOX 7 has contacted several residents of areas where the burglaries have occurred, and they say it’s hard for anyone to get inside the buildings.

“You need a key fob to get in and out, and you also need a key fob to get to certain floors, so you can’t just get to a floor, you definitely need a key fob to get in,” says Enrique Mendez, a city center resident.

Enrique Mendez has been living near Rainey for about a year, and within the first few months, someone broke into his garage and stole his motorcycle.

“I filed a report with the APD, but there have been so many robberies in the area, especially with motorcycles, that people just go into the garage and take them,” Mendez says.

According to APD Chief’s latest monthly report, burglaries have remained stable over the past two years.

The APD reports that these suspects are involved in several burglaries that occurred at the 70th block of Rainey Street, the 100th block of Colorado Street, and the 500th block of West Avenue.

When FOX 7 contacted the residents of the area, they said they sometimes notice someone entering the garage immediately after they enter.

“It makes you think that whoever comes in and out, you know they are definitely tracking a community that has people you know inside your building,” Mendes says.
