Buc-ee’s could soon arrive in North Carolina

Buc-ee’s, the renowned mega convenience store chain headquartered in Texas, is potentially on its way to Mebane, North Carolina. The city of Mebane has revealed that plans are underway for a Buc-ee’s location near Interstate 85/40, specifically at 1447 Trollingwood-Hawfields Road. This strategic site connects the Burlington/Graham area with Orange County and is just over 20 miles outside Greensboro.

The city received an application from Buc-ee’s, which expressed interest in rezoning their properties identified by Alamance County Parcels. It should be noted that Buc-ee’s had previously planned to open a store in Orange County in 2021. However, the company ultimately withdrew its application, deeming the location unsuitable. In a letter to the Orange County Planning Department, Buc-ee’s stated that the area was “just not a good fit.”

The proposed development in Orange County, called Efland Station, aimed to encompass a vast 104-acre space. Buc-ee’s had ambitious plans for the site, including the addition of 120 gas pumps, 64,000 square feet of retail space, and the creation of up to 200 jobs with a minimum hourly wage of $15.

In light of the potential Mebane expansion, local officials and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are in the midst of reviewing a preliminary site plan and traffic impact analysis. These evaluations will inform the next steps in the process, which involve the Mebane Planning Board. It is the responsibility of the Planning Board to consider the requests made by Buc-ee’s and provide recommendations to the Mebane City Council.

Moving forward, public hearings will be scheduled before the City Council, where the final decision to approve or deny the requests will be made. The fate of Buc-ee’s arrival in Mebane hinges on this decision. Ultimately, the community awaits the potential economic benefits, job opportunities, and convenience that a Buc-ee’s store could bring to the area.
