Brooklyn man gets 20 years in prison for assaulting an Asian woman

Prosecutors announced Tuesday that a Brooklyn man who beat an Asian woman to death will spend the next two decades behind bars.

Elisaul Perez was sentenced to 20 years in prison after he attacked Gui Ying Ma, 61, with a rock in November 2021 while she was sweeping the sidewalk in her Corona neighborhood, according to the Queens District Attorney’s office.

The 33-year-old confessed to a heartless crime last month when he pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in Queens Supreme Court.

Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz hopes the verdict will be “some consolation” for the victim’s family.

“A long sentence will hold the defendant accountable for an unprovoked attack that resulted in the removal of a beloved member from the community,” Katz said in a statement.

According to the district attorney’s office, Perez picked up a large rock and hit Ma on the head, causing her to fall on November 26, 2021. While on the ground, he again hit her with a rock, prosecutors said.

The brutal attack was caught on camera, prosecutors said.

Ma was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery for a severe head injury. But she died of her injuries about three months later at Elmhurst Hospital.

After Perez is released from prison, he will have five years of supervision after his release.
