Brooklyn Deli owner shames shoplifters with ‘Thieves of the Week’ video

With crime levels on the rise in his neighborhood (and parts of the city in general), a Brooklyn wine cellar owner takes matters into his own hands to stop people from stealing from his store: to shame store thieves in the store.

The owner of Green Olives Deli and Grill in Park Slope makes a Thieves of the Week video that he plays on a monitor in his store. In the latest video, a group of teenage girls took chips and candy without paying.

The owner said he no longer plays this video at the request of the parents for one of the girls who was seen on a security camera stealing treats.

“I think everyone has learned their lesson now and hopefully they don’t do it again,” said shop owner Majid Elbahri. “But if they do it again, of course I’ll put it back, thieves of the week. Because they should be ashamed of it.”

Police statistics for Precinct 78, where the store is located, show that on an annualized basis, grand larceny has increased by a staggering 320 percent and petty theft has risen by 72 percent.
