Brookhaven to Launch Community Choice Energy Aggregation Energy Program in May

Supervisor Ed Romijn announced that the City of Brookhaven will launch the Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) energy program in May. Households and small businesses using natural gas will be sent a letter explaining the details of the program. The program offers an energy option over the default utility service rate for a portion of a customer’s natural gas bill. This allows the city to purchase natural gas on behalf of residents and small businesses within its borders. Chief Romaine and the city council took the first steps towards creating a CCA program during a public hearing on October 3, 2022.
In addition to the City of Brookhaven, over 100 other New York State municipalities have established the CCA program, including the Village of Lynbrook, the Village of Bellerose, the City of Plattsburgh, the City of New Baltimore, the City of Cicero, the Village of Wesley Hills, and others. For more information about the CCA energy program, including a full list of participating municipalities, visit www.GoodEnergy.com.
Supervisor Romijn said: “The high cost of energy continues to rise, making it difficult for many families and small businesses to keep up with the times. By creating the Community Choice Aggregation energy program, the city can help reduce its energy bills and keep more money in its pockets. I encourage every natural gas consumer to learn more about this natural gas savings program.”
“By combining natural gas use by residents and small businesses, the city’s CCA program creates tremendous purchasing power by allowing the community to find a competitive fixed price that provides protection from volatile energy markets,” said Javier Barrios, Managing Partner at Good Energy.
Recently, Good Energy representatives Javier Barrios and Edward Carey were guests of Supervisor Romaine on Brookhaven Town’s Coffee with the Supervisor TV program. It is currently available to watch on Brookhaven Cable Channel 18; at www.BrookhavenNY.gov; YouTube; and Facebook in Brookhaven.
The CCA Energy Program was created by the New York Public Service Commission in April 2016. Operated by Good Energy LP, Brookhaven Town’s CCA energy program operates similarly to a bulk purchase agreement—the city purchases large amounts of energy for a group of residents. and small businesses. This allows the city to take advantage of more competitive rates from energy providers for residents participating in the CCA, resulting in lower gas and/or electricity bills. Residents are not required to be part of the CCA, they do not need to sign a contract to join, and they can leave the program at any time with no early termination or exit fees. No taxpayer or government funds are used to run the CCA program.
