Brookhaven Highway Department Receives $380,000 Grant from US Department of Transportation

Brookhaven Highway Supervisor Daniel P. Loscuadro announced the City has received a $380,000 award from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Grant Program.
Funding for the Town of Brookhaven Vision Zero Action is part of $800 million in grants given to 510 communities across the country to improve road safety planning. The city of Brookhaven was one of 12 awards in New York State and the only recipient in Suffolk County.
Action Plan grants help communities create safety plans to reduce road fatalities, laying the foundation for a comprehensive set of actions. The grant will be used by the Brookhaven Highway Authority to develop a comprehensive safety action plan. Plans may include installing new sidewalks in areas where there have been pedestrian casualties; adding bike lanes; or building additional traffic control devices, Losquadro said.
The estimated total cost of the project is $475,000, with the grant covering 80 percent and the city’s share of 20 percent.
“The ultimate goal of this project is to study and develop an action plan to avoid fatalities on the city’s roads,” Losquadro said. “Solutions may include new traffic control devices; better access for pedestrians; new designs and street configurations to improve safety combined with higher levels of education. However, the ultimate goal will be zero deaths on city roads.”
Brookhaven City Superintendent Ed Romaine said: “Traffic safety and saving lives are a top priority in the city and this study will provide a true assessment of the task at hand. I thank Congressman Lalota for his efforts to secure funding, safeguard our tax revenue in Brookhaven Town, and his commitment to helping the people of our community.”
“With the kind of taxes Long Islanders pay, we deserve smooth roads. To ensure that we contribute to the quality of life and safety of motorists, it is critical that elected officials fight for our fair share of federal funding,” said Rep. Nick LaLota (NY-01). “For every tax that New Yorkers send to Washington, we only get back ninety-three cents. That’s why I’m 100% committed to getting as much of our tax revenue home as possible to make Long Island more accessible to our families and businesses.”
