Bob Iger jumps on the Avatar Boom with a new attraction at Disneyland

Walt Disney plans to add Avatar to Disneyland and explore other options at its theme parks as it looks for more ways to engage its guests.

CEO Bob Iger said during the company’s first-quarter earnings announcement that the success of the latest Avatar movie is driving the creation of Avatar at Disneyland California. Avatar: The Way of Water is currently the fourth biggest film of all time in the world, having grossed approximately $2.2 billion at the box office to date.

While it’s unclear what type of Avatar will be created at Disneyland, Iger said that when Pandora – Avatar World launched at Walt Disney World in Florida, it encouraged more people to visit Animal Kingdom, the park where Pandora is located. Pandora includes two trips: Avatar – Flight of Passage and Na’vi River Journey.

“We learned that when we invest in capacity, Star Wars lands can be a good example of that, Pandora was a great example that we can grow our business. In fact, if you look at the results when we put Pandora in the Animal Kingdom year after year, they were staggering in terms of how many people visited the Animal Kingdom,” Eiger explained.

Iger, who returned as CEO in November after a difficult two-year tenure as his hand-picked successor Bob Chapek, said he spoke with Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney’s Parks, Experiences and Products, to look at all of the company’s franchises. to see where Disney can invest in them at their theme parks to increase capacity while maintaining guest satisfaction.

In yet another attempt to keep guests happy, CFO Christine McCarthy said in a phone call that Disney managed to achieve strong growth in revenue and operating profit in the quarter despite a targeted reduction in capacity of its in-house theme parks by around 20% during certain peak holiday periods. compared to pre-pandemic levels to prioritize guests.

“As of the current quarter, attendance at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort is higher than the previous year and based on bookings, we expect this trend to continue,” she said.

While Disney’s theme park business is doing well, many visitors over the past two years have been highly critical of the price hikes and other steps the company has taken, including ending the Magical Express bus service from the airport in Orlando, Florida. to Walt Disney World resorts, the introduction of the Genie travel planning and booking system and the theme park booking system.

Listening to guest concerns, Disney said last month it was making several changes to its in-house theme parks, including making bookings easier.

Changes include: Overnight self-parking charges at Walt Disney World resorts will end; Walt Disney World Annual Pass holders will be able to visit theme parks after 2:00 pm without an appointment at the park (except Saturdays and Sundays in the Magic Kingdom), and those who purchase the Genie+ service will receive digital downloads of photos of their trips taken in the park on the day of their shopping at no extra charge.
