Bioluminescent Waves Illuminate San Diego Beaches Once Again
Over the past few nights, visitors to San Diego County’s beaches have been treated to the mesmerizing sight of bioluminescent waves. Local hobbyist photographer Vishwas Lokesh recently captured stunning photos and videos of the waves glowing in neon blue hues, which he shared with NBC 7. According to Lokesh, the bioluminescence has been visible from the sand since Saturday, with sightings at various beaches including Torrey Pines State Beach, North Ponto Beach, and Carlsbad State Beach.
The phenomenon of bioluminescence is caused by tiny organisms known as Lingulodinium polyedra, which drift in the ocean. These motile photosynthetic dinoflagellates possess unique characteristics that allow them to move around actively in the water. Dr. Drew Lucas, an associate professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego, described them as the “Michael Phelps of the plankton world” due to their exceptional swimming abilities. These organisms can dominate the coastal ecosystem, turning the water red during the day, leading to the term “red tide,” and emitting a glowing light at night when physically disturbed.
In order to witness the bioluminescent display, it is essential for it to be dark as the organisms do not glow in the presence of light. While the phenomenon can occur throughout the year, Lucas noted a slight preference for spring to early fall. For those unable to visit the beach at night, Lucas shared a tip to recreate the glowing effect at home by filling a jar with red water and exposing it to darkness before shaking it to witness the bioluminescence.
The duration of the bioluminescent red tides can vary, with some lasting for a couple of weeks while others may persist for months. When planning to observe the electric blue waves from the shore, it is crucial for the red tide to be present in the breaking waves. While swimming in bioluminescent waters is generally considered safe, the decomposition of organisms in the ocean can lead to oxygen depletion, potentially harming marine life and causing discomfort due to the release of aerosols.
