Bill to Change Florida’s Concealed Carry Laws Removes First Tallahassee Barrier

TALLAHASSEE, Florida. — A bill to allow Florida residents to carry concealed firearms without a license is moving forward after clearing its first hurdle in the state House of Representatives.

Bill HB 543 passed the House Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights, the Rule of Law, and the Operation of Government by a vote of 10 to 5 along party lines, with a GOP majority on the committee supporting it.

In addition to removing the requirement for a concealed carry license, the bill also requires a person who wishes to conceal the carry of a weapon to carry a valid ID when carrying a firearm.

It also allows non-Florida residents to be able to carry a concealed weapon while in the state if they meet requirements, including holding a valid concealed carry firearms license in their state.

Members of the House Subcommittee on Constitutional Rights heard six proposed amendments to the bill, all of which failed.

The bill also received many hours of public comment from both sides of the gun debate.

“This bill, again, will in no way change who and where can carry with them,” said one of the commentators. “It just removes the requirement to ask for permission from the government and removes the fee.”

“Supporters of this bill said it would make Florida a freer state, but I contend that living in constant fear of being hurt or killed by a militant is not a free life,” said another.

The bill now goes to the Judiciary Committee before it can travel to the floor of the House of Representatives for a full vote.
