Biden’s Super Bowl Interview Won’t Happen, White House Spokesman Says

A White House official said Friday night that it was “inaccurate” to say the interview had been rescheduled, contradicting a statement from a Fox Corp.

NEW YORK. It looks like a Super Bowl interview between President Joe Biden and streaming service Fox Corp. interrupted over and over again.

A White House official said Friday night that it was “inaccurate” to say the interview had been rescheduled, contradicting a Fox Corp. official who earlier in the day said it was happening.

The announcement appeared to signal the final end to the ping-pong saga over whether Biden sits down with Fox interviewers before the Super Bowl on Sunday. Presidents traditionally give interviews to a television channel that broadcasts a football match, in this case Fox.

However, this year negotiations broke down.

The correspondence began Friday with a tweet from White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre.

“The President looked forward to the Fox Soul interview to discuss the Super Bowl, the state of the nation, and critical issues impacting the daily lives of Black Americans,” she wrote. “We were told that Fox Corp. asked to cancel the interview.

Fox Soul was created in 2020 and is aimed at black viewers.

A few hours later, Fox Corp. published a controversial statement.

“After the White House contacted Fox Soul on Thursday night, there was some confusion,” a spokesperson said. “Fox Soul is looking forward to interviewing the President for Sunday’s Super Bowl.”

The spokesperson added that the interviewers — Vivica A. Fox, actress and host of Cocktails with the Queens and sportscaster Mike Hill — arrived in Washington after flying in from Los Angeles.

But a White House announcement later on Friday added another twist.

“As we said before, we have arranged interviews with FOX Sports anchor Mike Hill and Vivica A. Fox with the President ahead of the Super Bowl, and Fox Corp. canceled the interview,” the statement said. “Fox has since released a statement saying the interview was rescheduled, which is not true.”

In 2021, Biden spoke to CBS News anchor Nora O’Donnell before a game, and last year he spoke to NBC News’ Lester Holt.
