Biden insists EV charging stations will help ‘build community’

President Joe Biden is dismissing another potential benefit from moving away from gas-powered cars.

If you’re buying an electric vehicle (EV), you don’t have to pay for gas and you’re likely to get significant savings on maintenance. In addition, their driving is more environmentally friendly.

And now the president is suggesting they may have another benefit: the growth of communities.

During remarks on the economy on Wednesday, Biden said: “For every gas station that [gets] built, what’s going on? All of a sudden you have a fast food store nearby… You are building a community.”

“What we do with these charging stations is exactly what my grandfather did. I’m not kidding,” he continued.

Biden insists EV charging stations will help ‘build community’

Biden added: “You are building little tiny communities. He is building a region. He takes care of things.”

Watch the video below:

It’s a good idea: Thousands of shiny new charging stations are popping up across the country in small or seedy towns, drawing people to them and boosting commerce as drivers need food while they wait for their cars to charge.

If there was such an economic boom for communities, it would be a big advantage for electric vehicles.

But it seems to be a vision based on a gas station model.

One of the reasons gas stations exist is because you need access to oil. And you need a place to store the oil. You will not see people with one or two gas stations near their cafes or offices.

However, charging stations for electric vehicles do not need such an infrastructure.

And often you see charging stations popping up in existing malls, retail stores, and gas stations that already have a built-up community.

So for sure there may be enterprising spirits who see an opportunity to make money or revive their community.

But at this point, it’s hard to imagine that electric vehicle charging stations will be a catalyst for “building” communities.
