Bethune-Cookman students protest ‘poor living conditions’ after Ed Reid video

DAYTONA BEACH, Florida. — Hundreds of Bethune-Cookman University students protested for hours on Monday afternoon against what they describe as poor living and campus conditions.

This came after the school announced that it was ending contract negotiations with Ed Reed as head football coach. The former NFL star spoke on social media about campus conditions during her visit.

The students said Reed’s videos inspired the protest, but added that they had been living in poor conditions on campus for years. They said Reid brought it to the big stage.

“We express concern. We send emails all the time. No Answers. That’s what it led to,” said student Jania Jones.

Students yelled “the board of trustees must go” and listed problems on campus during the protest.

Some of the photos and videos shared with News 6 show mold on the walls, ceilings and furnishings of the dorm.

“I pay thousands of dollars a month to be here and they don’t care about it. The last couple of months I’ve been here, I’ve literally been sick because of the mold. My shower makes my skin pimple,” said Saida, a freshman at a historically black university.

Reed’s social media video also mentions the lack of cleanliness on campus.

“Now I am walking here with the football team and picking up trash,” he said in the video.

Reid was chosen to replace Terry Sims, the former head football coach of Bethune-Cookman, who was fired in November because the school was looking for someone who could “ensure that we not only create a championship culture on the pitch, but also striving for academic excellence. and career achievements off the field.

Reed was on campus during contract negotiations with the school, where he said he was greeted with trash and poor conditions.

“Get out of here man… These (expletive) didn’t even clean my (expletive) office when I came here,” he said.

Then, over the weekend, the school announced it was ending talks with Reid, issuing a statement saying it was in the best interest of the university, the team, and the students to restart the search.

Shortly after, Reid was seen in another social media video.

“There are corrupt people in this world. Some evil people who don’t care about kids like me,” he said.

The BCU football players were disappointed by this news.

“He wants change, but not just on the football team. He wanted it for HBCU, the BCU community. I feel like it’s just a slap in the face,” said quarterback Tyrone Franklin Jr.

Other students at the protest said Reed was right.

“From the point of view of many of us, he spoke about what was wrong and got rid of him because of it,” Jones said.

News 6 has reached out to the school for comment, but have yet to receive a response.
