Beloved 90-year-old East Village store owner Ray Alvarez has a real guardian angel watching over him.
The Angels are on the side of a beloved East Village store owner.
Local hero Ray Alvarez, 90, received a friendship award Saturday from Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliva, who spoke of the time his life was saved by a nearby fixture about 30 years ago. Sliva recalled being beaten in the street while living on Avenue A before Alvarez called the police and gave him a chance to escape.
The assailant “knocked me to the ground, either killed me or turned me into a vegetable, and Ray came out and intervened,” said Plum, who praised Ray’s cocky candy store owner.
Nearly two weeks ago, Alvarez received a horrendous beating from a man who tried to sell him two cases of seltzer outside his shop in the middle of the night. He still had a black eye and a nasty scratch on his face when Plum greeted him, and wore a baseball cap that said “Old Soul of New York”.
“This man is just incredible,” Plum said. “Many of us wouldn’t be able to take a lick and come back ticking!”
Alzarez did indeed return to the store hours after Luis Peroso allegedly hit him with a rock attached to his belt.
“Thank you so much for the gift,” Alvarez said of his framed “Friend of the Guardian Angels” certificate. “Oh my friends, thank you. I feel great.”
Peroso, 39, was arrested last week and charged with assaulting a very elderly man. Plum expressed admiration for the store owner’s tenacity and quick return to the store.
“This man is incredible,” said a local radio host and former mayoral candidate. “I mean, think about it. This guy stayed up all night, old school, didn’t go anywhere.
