Beer can thrown at Sen. Ted Cruz during Houston Astros World Series parade

A man accused of throwing a beer can at U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz as the politician rode in Monday’s Houston Astros World Series parade was arrested and faces assault charges, according to the Houston Police Department.

HPD said Monday afternoon on Twitter that it was the only arrest its officers made during the parade, which lasted more than an hour and drew hundreds of thousands of fans.

Cruz, a Republican who has attended Astros playoff games both this year and in previous seasons, was booed by many fans Monday as he rode atop a Humvee and waived to the crowd. He was struck by a thrown beer can in the 2400 block of Smith St., according to police, near the end of the parade route in Midtown.

“The beer can struck the senator in the chest/neck area,” HPD wrote on Twitter. “The senator did not require medical attention.”

HPD said it would release the name of the arrested man, who is 33 years old, once criminal charges have been filed.

Cruz was one of several elected officials from the Houston area who participated in the parade. Among the others were U.S. Reps. Dan Crenshaw, a fellow Republican, along with Democrats Lizzie Fletcher, Sylvia Garcia and Sheila Jackson Lee.
