The grand apartment opens on the 19th floor in a foyer that leads to a 29-foot-long living room. There is also a large chef’s kitchen and a master bedroom with terrace.

Additional bedrooms are located on the lower floor. Design details include herringbone oak floors, plaster moldings and a curved staircase.

Mike D.’s parents, Hester, a social worker, and Harold, a teacher, were avid art lovers who eventually devoted themselves entirely to the art world. “My parents didn’t separate their social and work lives — they existed in the same ecosystem in an apartment,” Michael told the New York Times.

The couple reportedly moved to Eldorado in the mid-1960s as tenants and bought a two-apartment combo for about $1.2 million when they were converted to co-ops in 1982. Harold died the same year at the age of 56. Hester stayed in Eldorado, raised her children there, and remarried. In 2009, she added an additional two-bedroom apartment to her residence on the 18th floor.

Esther lived in El Dorado for over 50 years until her death at the age of 91 in 2020. During this time, the apartment became a showcase for her extensive art collection, which included Picasso, antiques, old masters, contemporary art and furniture.

Her collection was so impressive that it was the subject of a 2021 Sotheby’s auction that reportedly fetched $26.7 million.

“I liked her fearlessness and vision,” Michael told the Times, adding that her corner office was hung with Beastie Boys gold records.

The listing brokers are Michael J. Franco of Compass and Amy Kutcher of Corcoran. They declined to comment.
