Baylor Scott & White Service Dog Helps and Brings Joy to Rehab Patients

FORT WORTH (CBSNewsTexas.com) – Always there when you need a shoulder to lean on, man’s best friend, or in this case, everyone’s best friend, Grayson.

Grayson is Baylor Scott & White’s (BSW) second service dog to work at their Rehabilitation Institute.

“He went way beyond anything we could ever imagine,” said recreational therapist Kathy White.

The joy that the yellow Labrador gives to patients is just one of the privileges that his badge gives to the institution in Fort Worth. He goes to work every day to help people get back on the path to normal life.

“If he can make it easier or more interesting. I think it’s a win in every way,” said Megan O’Malley, director of BSW Rehab.

Through a partnership with Canine Companions, an organization that uses service animals to help people with disabilities, Grayson works with both patients who stay in the hospital and those who come in five days a week to actively rehabilitate their injuries. or states.

In addition to a stroke, a rehabilitation center patient, José Martinez, was involved in a car accident that resulted in the amputation of part of his right leg. He works on his balance, trying to stay put while Grayson keeps pushing him.

Another patient, Kali Mullenax, has a malformation of the anterior right side of the brain, and after three treatments the left side of her body was weakened.

Part of her therapy is Grayson’s petting, which allows her to work on opening her left hand, which usually remains clenched.

“It’s definitely a weird feeling to make those connections in your head again, but it’s cool,” Mullenax said.

Something as simple as re-learning how to stand and grab an object can’t be taken for granted, and neither can a two-year-old puppy who helped people regain a piece of their old life.

“Anything we can do with him and everything he can do with patients is pretty impressive,” White said.
