Baby penguin arrives at Monterey Bay Aquarium

MONTEREY, CA (KION-TV) — African penguin Jerry is the newest addition to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This baby hatched on November 30th but was old enough to join the colony on February 1st.

Jerry weighed 52 grams and now weighs 2.22 kg. Amigo and Elizabeth are Jerry’s parents, but it is said at the aquarium that Boulder and Walvis are acting as foster parents.

“We don’t know Jerry’s gender yet, so we’ll use the gender-specific pronoun ‘they’ until we can determine the gender with a blood test. So far, Jerry’s personality is similar to Amigo’s: independent and daring,” the aquarium said.

Jerry is named after Jerry Low-Sabado, an educator, public defender, and friend of the Aquarium. Jerry lived by the motto “change with kindness” and was passionate about sharing the history and contributions of Chinese Americans to the region with the community, and worked with the Aquarium to tell her ancestor’s story through the Roll Back the Tide program. her demise in 2021.
