Avaneer Health Interoperable Network Creates ‘Information Highway’

Avaneer Health, a digital network founded by Aetna, Elevance Health, a Cleveland clinic; Health Care Service Corporation, Sentara Healthcare and others announced the creation of a system of peer-to-peer care between payers, providers and other participants.

According to Avaneer Health CEO Stuart Hanson, a secure, interoperable network based on FHIR creates an “information highway” that can save healthcare administrations billions each year.

“When we were founded, we were driven by a bold vision for a new way of data flow in healthcare, which was launched in 2017 by a group of industry leaders who sought to reinvent healthcare from the inside out. That vision is now built and live,” Hanson said in a statement.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

The decentralized web helps solve a long-standing interoperability problem in the industry.

Avaneer’s network eliminates fragmented data warehouses, multiple point-to-point connections, layers of technology debt, incomplete information and manual processes, the company said.

It will soon include a real-time adjudication application that will speed up and improve the accuracy of filing and reviewing medical claims.

Real-time data sharing across a shared technology stack, which launched in November 2022, digitizes the back office of the revenue cycle, Hanson said.

“It’s abrasion removal,” Hanson said. “This will help providers get paid faster.”

Jamison Fowler, chief digital officer of Sentara Healthcare and former chief digital officer and CIO of Anthem, said he believes the reason providers and payers don’t share data is due to security standards and the “plumbing” of the healthcare system. .

“We’re seeing a very broad set of use cases,” Fowler said of the network, including for discharges.

“We are solving this $30 billion problem,” Fowler said.

According to Avanir, the secure platform has an immutable audit trail and is decentralized, so the data remains under the control of its creator.

Members can subscribe and launch their own solutions in collaboration with payers and providers.

These processes also improve the quality of patient care, the company says.

“Connecting to the network and otherwise interacting with payers and other providers will allow healthcare organizations to increase efficiency and automate administrative processes, leading to better patient and physician experiences,” said Sonia O’Malley, senior director of innovation at Cleveland Clinic. “Another clear advantage of the network is that the data is not aggregated – it remains with the sender.”

Mark Crow, director of IT innovation at Sentara Healthcare, said: “This is a complete dynamic shift in the way providers and payers communicate.”

According to Hanson, the system’s technology stack infrastructure optimizes compliance and complies with the 21st Century Medicines Act and FHIR standards.

In February, government leaders thanked the Office of the National Health Information Technology Coordinator and six qualified health information networks for their work in establishing a nationwide interoperability network under the 21st Century Medicines Act.
