Authorities say a fight between a group of teenagers ended in a fatal shooting outside of Fort Worth’s Whataburger area.

FORT WORTH, Texas – One teenager is dead and another critically injured after a fight between a group of high school students ended in shooting outside a Whataburger restaurant in the Dallas-Fort Worth area on Friday, authorities said.

According to NBC affiliate KXAS, the shooting occurred around 4 p.m. at Whataburger on West Berry Street, located near ISD High School in Fort Worth.

Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes called the events at the press conference “meaningless” and asked for the community’s help in finding the culprit, according to KXAS.

Noakes told KXAS that the incident began with a verbal altercation between a group of high school students who knew each other. The argument escalated into a fight before, at some point, someone opened fire, injuring two teenagers.

The teens, described by officials as a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old girl, were taken to hospital in critical condition. The boy later died.

“This is another example of senseless, tragic violence that should never have happened,” Noakes told KXAS. “Unfortunately, it involved very young people right here in the city of Fort Worth. We will do everything we can to bring those responsible to justice,” Noakes said.

Police were not immediately able to provide a description of the suspected shooter.
