Austin police shoot suspect during pursuit in downtown Austin

Austin police fatally shot a suspect in a shooting during a foot chase Sunday night in the downtown entertainment district.

Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon briefed media surrounded by city officials.

Chacon said the first 911 call came in around 11:33 p.m. stating that there was a man with a gun in the 5th and Guadalupe area.

The officers were immediately sent to the area.

About a minute later, another call showed that numerous shots were heard and people were running.

As the boss described it, it was chaos.

It was the night before a federal holiday, so the Downtown entertainment district was quite crowded, even though it was a Sunday evening.

About a minute after the police responded, one person was shot dead and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Some officers treated the man until an ambulance arrived, while other officers closed off the area.

Three police officers in an SUV found a man who looked like the shooter.

They say that they saw his gun and shouted for him to drop the weapon, but he ran away.

One of the officers jumped out of the SUV and ran after him.

Seconds after this pursuit, an officer fired at the suspect, knocking him to the ground.

He was taken to the hospital, where he died.

“During all these events, it is important to emphasize that this is an entertainment district in the city center. There were people everywhere, many walking, people in vehicles, and also in general it was a very busy area of the city, despite the late hour, however, with the exception of a man who was shot dead. and the suspect shot dead by an officer, no one else was hurt, and no officer was hurt in this incident.”

Firearms were confiscated on the spot.

All three officers were held administratively responsible, which is standard protocol following an officer’s firing.

All officers had body cameras and this video will be released in 10 business days.

The police are now conducting two investigations – one criminal and one administrative.
