Atlanta police release body camera footage from raid after fatally shot activist

Manuel Esteban Páez Terán, a 26-year-old activist, was killed by police last month as authorities tried to remove the group from the site of a planned public safety training center that its opponents call “Police City.” The Atlanta Police Department released body camera footage from the raid on protesters that led to his death. The footage was filmed during the roundup of protesters that led to his death.

The video tapes, provided in full by the city on Wednesday and compressed for publication in The Washington Post, do not show the shooting at Paez Teran, but simply capture the sound of gunfire.

The clips, however, offer a fresh look at the atmosphere and apparent confusion that prevailed that day. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has stated that there are no footage of the shooting from body cameras because state patrol officers are not required to wear them; the footage that has just been made public was taken from body cameras worn by officers who were not involved in the execution of Paez Teran.

According to police, Paes Teran fired at the policeman, after which the policeman returned fire, killing the activist. The incident sparked protests that escalated into violence. Paez Teran’s family demanded that the investigation into the incident be open and honest.

When the officers arriving on the scene hear the first shot at 9:01 am, the recordings show that the cheerful mood among the officers present is turning into confusion. Four shots from a gun. After a few moments, there is a period of seven seconds, during which it sounds like dozens of shots have been fired.
