Atherton moves ahead with controversial high-density housing project

Atherton officials are pushing ahead with a controversial plan that could potentially increase building density in many parts of the city.

Steph and Aisha Curry are among those who oppose the project, citing it could seriously impact privacy. The city council approved the plan on Tuesday evening.

“It’s hard for a community like Atherton to change,” Atherton city manager George Rodericks said. “This is a fundamental change. We’ve never had multi-unit zoning.”

For the Curry family, that would mean the multimillion-dollar Oakwood Boulevard adjoining their home would be replaced by perhaps a dozen three-story townhouses.

That’s why Curry wrote a letter asking the city to withdraw its approval of the project.

Part of Currie’s letter reads: “Safety and privacy for us and our children continues to be our top priority and one of the main reasons we chose Atherton as our home. There are serious concerns in terms of both privacy and security as three-story townhouses are looming. right behind us.”

The Curries have also asked the city to invest in higher fencing and landscaping to block the sight lines of their property if the project is approved.

The approval of the urban housing element paves the way for development, but there is still a public hearing process that could take up to three years before a building permit is issued.
