Assault rifle, 163 rounds confiscated from passenger heading to Houston, TSA says.

NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Officials from the Transportation Security Administration say they managed to prevent a passenger who had an assault rifle and 163 rounds of ammunition from boarding a plane bound for Houston.

According to the TSA, the passenger was pulled over on Valentine’s Day at New Orleans Louis Armstrong International Airport (MSY).

The deputies were able to take a Palmetto PA-15 Multi AR firearm loaded with 30 .300 caliber rounds from the passenger. Five additional magazines were also loaded, bringing the total number of rounds in hand luggage to 163.

The man was reportedly a 52-year-old resident of Jefferson, Louisiana.

He now faces a civil fine from the TSA that could amount to nearly $15,000.

“Threat detection is our mission, and our dedicated employees protect travelers every day,” said Arden Hudson, director of the TSA Federal Security Service. “Passengers should focus on what is inside their hand luggage before entering our checkpoint. The use of a loaded weapon poses an unnecessary risk to both travelers and our employees.”
