As school campuses closed on Tuesday, one area of San Antonio remained open.

A post on the Southside ISD social media site said: “School is the warmest place they have and some parents may not have anyone to take care of their children.”

SAN ANTONIO. On Tuesday, as winter weather rolled in, nearly every school district in Bexar County closed due to the cold.

The canceled classes have forced some parents to stay at home to look after their children, who suddenly have a day off. Siblings Crew and Bay Brown weren’t upset about staying at home and not going to school after the Northside Independent School District closed campuses.

“I’m happy that I don’t have to go to school, but then when I’m at home, I get bored and kind of want to go to school,” Bay Brown said with a laugh.

Bay jokingly asked her mom Amanda Brown to take her to a park or pool to get out of the house. Her mom promised to paint, snacks, and her phone if the kids behaved while she worked.

An educator herself, Brown was teaching remotely at the college on Tuesday due to freezing conditions.

“We make it work,” Mom said.

Brown has worked in other industries and knows what it’s like to not be able to stay home at a moment’s notice or in inclement weather.

“I was in the place of people who had no choice, who had to work, and I had no one, and it’s very hard,” Brown said.

This is a reality that some families likely faced when school districts canceled classes. Nearly all campuses around Bexar County closed on Tuesday, except for the Southside Independent School District.

The district serves approximately 6,000 students across eight campuses.

“This morning at 5 am, our director of transportation drove the roads from the north side to our area, and he felt that the bus routes would be safe,” Superintendent Rolando Ramirez said.

Based on conversations with other superintendents, Ramirez got the impression that other areas would remain open. The next thing he realized was that they started announcing the closure.

“It was already about 6 o’clock, and we felt that our bus routes were already working. We felt that we would put our parents in a difficult position if they did not make arrangements for someone to be there with their children,” he said. Ramirez.

Ramirez added that schools are a warm place to go and provide guaranteed meals for students.

“And it was available to parents if they chose to send their children to school,” he said.

Ramirez said that if parents decide to leave their children at home, their absence will be justified. However, many students came to class on Tuesday.

At last check, Ramirez said Southside ISD had a 65 percent attendance rate in the county. The district is currently determining whether campuses will remain open on Wednesday.

“Whatever decision is made, we want to give our parents enough time to take action,” Ramirez said.

Other counties have already called for classes to be cancelled. A list of closed schools can be found here.

Brown said she trusts her school district to make the best decisions for staff and students.

“I know the county will make the best decision based on safety concerns.”
