APD SWAT responds to mental health crisis in US Congress

The Austin Police Department’s SWAT team responded to an incident near Congress S. Monday night.

Police said that around 4:53 p.m., officers received a call about a man with a knife at HEB on S. Congress and Alltorf.

The man then headed south through Congress and ended up on top of the food market building at 3002 S Congress Ave.

APD SWAT was then called in to help, along with the Austin Fire Department and the Austin-Travis County Ambulance Service.

A SWAT team managed to get the man out of the building and he was taken to a local hospital shortly thereafter, police said.

No one was hurt and no one was in danger.

Police said the man was having a mental health crisis.
