APD officers point guns at a Good Samaritan trying to help a victim of a shooting in downtown Austin

Austin, Texas – Sunday, February 19 is a day the Austin man will never forget. On the way home, he was driving along 5th Street and Red River when he noticed a body on the street.

Not knowing who it was, he approached the body and noticed that the man had gunshot wounds.

“I started calling 911, but I realized that another car was approaching the gentleman. So I pulled into oncoming traffic, turned on my flashers, and backed up, making sure I blocked traffic,” says the Good Samaritan.

The man, who wishes to remain anonymous, says he called 9-1-1 for help. He says he was on hold for three minutes.

The man waited for an answer, but the police arrived before he could contact the dispatchers.

“But when they showed up, I was the only person standing next to that person. So they rode up, and everyone, except for those with weapons at the ready, headed towards me. I put my hands in the air,” this Good says. Samaritan.

Once the police realized that the man was not a threat, they dropped their weapons and asked why he was at the scene.

“Once they realized that I was the one who was calling for my help, they put down their weapons for a moment and told me a little more about the incident. While they immediately went ahead and gave the guy support, the medics immediately jumped into place. guy and began to treat him, ”says this good Samaritan.

A couple of days after the incident, the man says he is still shaken by it.

“I really think that we need to figure out how we are going to step up, ensure that we have the right level of staffing to actually communicate on this issue, and not try to point the finger at both sides that there is an influx of crime in our city and we need to figure out how to deal with it,” says the Good Samaritan.
