An 82-year-old Westbury woman lost $9,400 in a phone scam; Police investigation

Squad 3 detectives are investigating an “elderly scam” that took place on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 at 00:00 in Westbury.
The 82-year-old woman received a phone call from a man she believed to be her grandson, detectives said. The man claimed to have been arrested in Pennsylvania and asked for $9,400 in attorney fees. The victim agreed to meet and exchanged money with an unknown man. Subject took the money and left on foot.
Some time later, the victim was contacted by her grandson, who informed her that he was not being arrested.
Subject is described as a white Hispanic male in his early 20s with short curly black hair.
The Nassau County Police Department is urging the public to be on the lookout and remind vulnerable family members, friends and neighbors of potential scams or scams.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact the Nassau County Crime Squad at 1-800-244-TIPS or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.
