Neighbors said an 85-year-old woman named Gloria was walking her dog when an alligator dragged her into the water in the Fairways 55 and older Spanish Lakes region.

One resident, 77-year-old Carol, said it was only after 12 noon.

“I heard something like a noise,” she said. “I looked out and I saw a dog, and I saw… my neighbor.”

Carol first called 911 and ran, trying and hoping she could help.

“I just remember how she came up and brushed her hair out of her face, and I said: “Swim to the rowboat,” and she said: “I can’t, the alligator grabbed me.”

“I have Shepherd’s longest hook to try and hook her or hit him or whatever,” Carol continued. “Punch him in the nose or something. There was nothing I could do and it’s haunting me right now.”

The victim was retrieved and the 11-foot alligator involved in the incident was captured by a hired alligator hunter.

Authorities said the victim’s dog survived and is in good condition.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission prioritizes public safety and administers the State Alligator Program (SNAP) to handle complaints regarding specific alligators that are deemed to pose a threat to people, pets, or property.

People concerned about an alligator should call the FWC Troublesome Alligator Toll Free Hotline at 866-FWC-GATOR (866-392-4286).
