Airspace Volume Leads to Flight Delays at PBIA

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida. Flights at Palm Beach International Airport have been delayed due to a large amount of “airspace,” the Federal Aviation Administration said Sunday afternoon.

The federal agency briefly announced a partial ground stop for inbound flights from noon to 2:15 p.m.

Around 2:00 p.m., the stop was canceled, but there is an average 52-minute departure delay on the ground until 6:59 p.m. and an average 30-minute departure delay that increases due to airspace, the FAA said.

The agency said the ground stop was applied to aircraft bound for PBIA from airports at three nearby FAA air traffic control centers: Houston, Jacksonville and Miami.

“When the number of planes that plan to fly to a certain airport or through a certain airspace exceeds a certain threshold, we may suspend departures to ensure a safe and controlled flow of traffic,” said Ian Gregor, FAA public affairs officer. told WPTV.

The airport’s website states that 13 departures and 12 arrivals are delayed at 20:30.

No other Florida airports have been allowed a ground stop: a flight at Orlando International Airport is delayed by 45 minutes and increased due to traffic management initiatives.
