AFJ revolutionizes patient care in Jamaica

January 16 a new health initiative in Jamaica, which serves vulnerable mothers as they access health care through the public health system, has been officially launched. The initiative began with a resounding success, attracting media attention from the Jamaica News Service, Loop News and The Gleaner.

“Called the Right Start Maternal and Newborn Initiative, the program is a collaboration between the Department of Health and Welfare, American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) and the Foundation for Jamaicans Abroad (JAHJAH).

The initiative will provide a range of care items for vulnerable mothers and their newborns, as well as improved diagnostic services in public health facilities using state-of-the-art, state-of-the-art portable ultrasound technology – butterfly monitors.

“Handheld devices supported by iPad technology will enable early and rapid diagnosis, such as screening for congenital or heart defects, prenatal testing, and checking for pregnancy complications.

“In addition, 100 teens and other vulnerable mothers will receive Snuggle Nests, portable baby beds/cots, as well as essentials including diapers, skincare, oral care and hygiene products. Later in March 2023, the program will reach about 2,000 mothers.

“Speaking today (January 16) at The Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in New Kingston, the Minister for Health and Welfare, Dr. Hon. Christopher Tufton praised the collaboration, which will improve diagnostic care, noting that 24 portable units were initially donated to more than 10 hospitals across the island for use in obstetrics, emergency and emergency departments.” This is reported by the Information Service of Jamaica.

“Doctor. Tufton thanked the partners in the venture, in particular American Friends of Jamaica, which funded $25,000 in ultrasonic devices and a Snuggle Nest with more than $15,000 in consumables.” Loop News stated.

In addition, The Gleaner acknowledges the great contribution of AFJ to this initiative. Reporting on how “last year [Dr. Trevor Dixon, CEO of the JAHJAH Foundation] was presented to the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) who were learning new ultrasound technology and were “amazed by the magnificence”.

Statement on how “AFJ has stepped up significantly by funding devices for the first phase of a portable ultrasound project in Jamaica. The JAHJAH Foundation and the team at Jacoby Medical Center in the Bronx, NY have combined their passion and dedication to commit to continuing education and training of physicians in ultrasound technology and the use of Butterfly iQ transducers with our university hospital partners. West Indies and Kingston State Hospital,” he said, adding that all partners are committed to making the project sustainable.”

Meanwhile, AFJ President Wendy Hart said the launch of the initiative is a manifestation of a collaborative partnership and commitment to improving outcomes for Jamaicans. “Our goal is to have these portable devices in the pockets of as many doctors as possible,” she said, thanking the donors who have contributed to the fund over the years.”

AFJ thanks the Department of Health and Welfare, Bailey Medical Supplies, Dennis Shipping, and the JAHJAH Foundation for supporting this initiative.
