Accused drunk driver breaks down after learning pregnant fiancee died in NYC crash

A pregnant Staten Island woman had her unborn baby vomited and was thrown 40 feet in a drunk driving accident as her driver fiancé learned just minutes before trial that both died.

Suspect Adem Nikezik, 30, wept uncontrollably during his first appearance before a judge after his lawyer broke the news that his fiancee, seven months pregnant, and unborn daughter were dead.

“No one told him that his fiancée and child had passed away,” Nikezik’s lawyer Mark Fonte told The Post outside of court. “He found out a few minutes ago, just before he went out [into the courtroom]. When I told him he burst into tears, sobbing. At first he was completely unbelieving.”

Nikezik, who appeared in court in a wheelchair and wearing a hospital gown, is charged with manslaughter, reckless homicide, assault on a vehicle and drunk driving in a fatal crash.

His fiancée, Adriana Silmetai, 23, whose sister is an NYPD cop, was in the passenger seat when the couple’s SUV hit a barrier and a pole early Saturday morning, splitting the car in half, prosecutors said in court.

“She was found at a crossroads,” Assistant District Attorney Nicholas Agostino told Judge Raja Rajeshwari. “Her severed leg was found 20 feet from her body. Her unborn child, torn from her body, was found 20 feet from her leg.”

According to the criminal record filed in the case, Nikezik told police officers at the scene that he was cut off by another driver before the fatal collision.

“Not every horrific accident rises to the level of a crime,” Fonte said.

But prosecutors said Nikezik was speeding and driving through traffic on Hylan Boulevard around 4:45 a.m. when he lost control of a white 2021 Dodge Challenger and crashed into a barrier.

Agostino said the crash happened after a “night of booze” for Nikeziq.

Prosecutors said the case will now go to a grand jury.

The judge ordered that Nikezik be kept on $400,000 cash bail or $700,000 bail.

He is due back in Staten Island court on Thursday.

The couple’s registry on Buy Buy Baby says they’re expecting a baby girl on April 12, and lists several items, including a crib and a Disney mobile phone.

The Silmetai family said she was one of four children and her sister was a police officer in the 62nd district of Brooklyn.

The family asked for privacy on Monday.
