According to the sheriff, Volusia deputies called home several times before shooting the man with the knives.

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida. Volusia County deputies reacted several times to the home of a man with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder before shooting him Sunday as he ran towards law enforcement officers while wielding two knives, the sheriff said.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood on Monday shared the details and released bodycam footage of the shooting, which included a deputy.

Deputies responded to Lakeshore Drive in New Smyrna Beach after receiving a call that a man identified as 43-year-old Michael Kollmar was having an “intermittent mental health episode.” When the deputies arrived, Kollmar had two knives – one in each hand – and did not lower them when asked to do so, the video shows.

MPs can be heard saying several times: “No one wants to hurt you.”

According to Chitwood, the body camera video shows Kollmar at one point taking a chair to block deputies from using tasers. He also used a chair to push MPs away from the doorway and close the door, as seen in the video.

A man armed with two knives was shot and killed by a deputy in New Smyrna Beach on Sunday, according to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

Later, aides walked around the house and helped the elderly man leave the area when Kollmar was shown running out the front door with knives in his hands. He was shot dead by an MP and taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery and is in a stable condition, according to officials.

“When he entered that door, at that speed he entered the door, all bets are off. He is armed with two knives and has nowhere to go,” Chitwood said at a press conference.

According to the sheriff’s office, this was the sixth time deputies have been called home, and the second in three weeks. One of the previous calls included an incident on January 17 in which Kollmar armed himself with knives and his mother called the authorities, claiming he was paranoid and possibly hallucinating.

Chitwood said that because deputies were called home several times and he was not eligible to be Baker, the sheriff’s office recommended that the family issue a unilateral order to give him the assistance he needed.

“The guy is out of his mind, and unfortunately, even when they were there on the 17th, he refused to talk to his psychiatrist…,” Chitwood said. “I don’t know what else we could have done.”

The sheriff also said that Kollmar had previously been arrested after stabbing a Port Orange man several times in July 2017. He was released in October 2022.

“I’m very proud of everything we’ve done, and I think when you look at the sergeant, how he ran that scene, you know, don’t come in, don’t do this, don’t do that, change back, back, back, get resources in place. This is what we learn,” Chitwood said.

In Sunday’s incident, Chitwood said he faces charges of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, false imprisonment and battery of a law enforcement officer. He also faces charges of violating probation.
