Abilene police say the man shot by a police officer had a gun

Police said there was a child in the car at the time of the incident. The child was not injured and was reunited with his family.

ABILEN, Texas. A man who Abilene police said was in possession of a gun was shot and killed on Sunday evening.

A call came in at around 6:30 p.m. Sunday asking police to check a house on North 9th Street because a neighbor was worried about a broken window, according to APD.

The police arrived and found the car in the driveway of the house, but no one was in the car at the time. Police said they spotted illegal drugs in the car. After seeing that there was no burglary, the officers began to develop a plan to combat drug trafficking, according to APD.

Making a plan, the police saw a man approaching the driver’s side of the car. The officer introduced himself as a police officer to the man and ordered him to show his hands.

This is when the police say that instead he reached to the back of his waist and pulled out a gun. The officer fired at the man, inflicting at least one blow to his torso.

Police determined that a child was in the car at the time of the incident. The unharmed child was quickly taken out of the area and reunited with his family.

After that, the employees who arrived at the scene began to provide medical assistance. The suspect was taken to the hospital and was listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound.

In accordance with administrative policy, the employees involved were placed on administrative leave. The incident is being investigated in parallel with the Texas Rangers.
