A stray driver of a suspected stolen truck caused an accident on the I-10 exit heading for the West Loop.

The westbound I-10 exit leading to the west loop is closed as first responders work to clear the scene.

HOUSTON. On Thursday, a man in a stolen truck led a short chase that ended in an accident on the I-10 exit leading to the Western Loop, police said.

Houston Police Department Lieutenant Larry Crowson said undercover officers were in the Spring Branch area when they spotted the stolen truck. Officers then tracked down the truck and called for reinforcements, Crowson said.

According to Crowson, the police in the marked units caught up with the truck at Hempstead and West Loop, and then the chase began.

According to Crowson, the driver of the hijacked truck exited the I-10 exit westbound and headed in the wrong direction, causing the police to stop chasing him because of the danger to other drivers.

Minutes later, a K9 unit on the ramp spotted a truck that crashed into three other vehicles, Crowson said. After the accident, the man started to run, but he was quickly caught and handcuffed.

The man and at least one other person were taken to hospital with injuries from the accident. They are expected to be fine, Crowson said.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will determine what charges will be brought against the man who drove the stolen truck. Crowson said police at the scene of the accident suspect he may have been taking drugs, possibly PCP.

The I-10 westbound exit is expected to open soon, leading to the western loop.
