A no-swimming warning has been issued after sewage entered Biscayne Bay due to a burst pipe on Jungle Island.

MIAMI (WSVN) – A no-swimming warning has been issued in the Biscayne Bay area after a sewer pipe burst near Jungle Island.

On Monday, the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department repaired a 12-inch pipe located at 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail in Miami.

Approximately 5,000 gallons of sewage spilled out of the pipe, but personnel were able to prevent approximately 2,200 gallons from entering the water. The remaining 2,800 gallons of sewage ended up in Biscayne Bay.

As a result of a pipe rupture, the nearby waterways of Joya Beach, Venice Causeway Park, Watson Island Marina and Grand Miami Marina are prohibited from swimming. The advisory board also informs the public that all water activities in the area should be avoided.

A press release issued by the county states that “sampling will be conducted by the Miami-Dade County Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources for hosted waters and recommendations remain in effect until two consecutive days of clear testing have passed.”

The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department’s priority is to provide safe and reliable services to the public. For more information about the Department’s services and programs, visit the WASD website.
