A new video shows an altercation between APD officers and Elisha Wright in downtown Austin.

A newly obtained video shows an additional angle of an altercation between Austin police officers and 22-year-old Elisha Wright. The incident took place in May 2022 on E. Sixth Street in downtown Austin.

Austin police allege that Wright punched an officer in the face moments before one of the viral videos began playing, but Wright’s attorney claims there was no punch and police used excessive force.

HALO camera footage from May 1, 2022, just before 2 a.m. on East Sixth Street, provides a third angle of the fight that took place.

The HALO camera video was filmed the same night as the video recorded by a bystander, which went viral. Mobile phone video shows APD officers stabbing and shackling Wright before taking him into custody after the fight.

RELATED COVERAGE:

FOX 7 Austin contacted the APD after the initial incident. They wrote to FOX 7 back in May stating that “Wright was one of the aggressors in this situation and punched the officer in the face.” APD says this was not captured on video from the eyewitness’ cell phone.

Wright’s lawyer provided body camera footage to FOX 7 and stated that it proves that Wright was not the aggressor in this incident.

Once again, APD doubled down on FOX 7’s second statement, still calling Wright the aggressor.

Nearly 9 months later, FOX 7 Austin got a third angle of this incident from the HALO cameras. On it, you can see a man, presumably Wright, who slides on his back and stands up instantly.

In the video, Wright is seen being put back on the ground, and the police run up to him. He jumps up and appears to stab before being caught by the police. This is where the eyewitness video begins.

FOX 7 contacted Wright’s lawyer and asked if he believes the new HALO video shows the impact police have claimed in their previous statements. Justin Moore says it doesn’t change his mind.

“Recently released HALO footage of Elisha Wright also confirms that the APD officers who were at the scene not only attacked Elisha without provocation, but also lied in their police report, saying that Elisha attacked the officer. The only thing that can be seen is Elisha protecting herself from further injury after a vicious attack by these officers,” Moore said.

“This only reinforces our request to the APD to fire these officers and to the Travis County District Attorney to bring criminal charges against the officers, which include, but are not limited to, assault and filing a false police report against Elisha,” Moore. added.

The Austin police also filed a statement:

“The APD officers involved in this incident have not been placed in limited or administrative duties in connection with this incident. We are aware of a short viral video depicting part of an incident that occurred on May 1, 2022 at approximately 1:50 AM in Block 400. E 6th St.

This incident began when several APD officers in the area reacted to a fight between four people, including Mr. Elisha Wright and his comrade. The incident is more fully captured in body camera video and other videos. The officers tried to defuse the situation, but to no avail, and Mr. Wright and his partner continued to quarrel.

The officers noticed that Mr. Wright and his companion were the aggressors and took steps to arrest them. Mr. Wright punched the officer in the face, causing injury before the police could arrest Mr. Wright and his companion.

APD has conducted an internal review of this particular resistance response and determined that it is consistent with state law and departmental policy.”
