A mother is accused of strangling two of her children and attempting to kill a third in Massachusetts.

A woman is accused of strangling her two children Tuesday night in Duxbury, Massachusetts, authorities were told Wednesday as they identified all three and announced they were seeking the mother’s arrest.

The woman was identified as 32-year-old Lindsey Clancy. The children killed were identified by Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz as Cora, 5, and Dawson, 3.

The third child, a 7-month-old boy, remained in the hospital Wednesday after being rushed to hospital by helicopter Tuesday night with what Cruz called “evidence of harm,” though he did not share details. He did not know the exact condition of the boy on Wednesday afternoon, but said, “We should all pray for him.”

Tragedy struck Duxbury on Tuesday when a woman was accused of strangling her children, killing two and sending one to the hospital.

The Plymouth County District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday evening that an arrest warrant had been issued for Clancy, who is charged with two counts of murder, three counts of strangulation and three counts of assault and battery with a deadly weapon. She is in custody at a Boston hospital.

The mother was also hospitalized after a suicide attempt, which initially called the police to the scene on Summer Street. She also remained in a Boston hospital on Wednesday, Cruz said, noting that his office would be keen to bring her to trial for murder charges as soon as she could.

According to Cruz, the investigation into the murders is ongoing.

“Our heartfelt condolences to the Clancy family. I cannot understand the depth of pain that must continue,” he said.

An incident in Duxbury, Massachusetts, which authorities called “an unimaginable and senseless tragedy” continued to be investigated Wednesday after prosecutors announced late Tuesday that two young children had died and an infant had been hospitalized.

Condolences are pouring in from everywhere, officials said, and the affected institutions released statements on Wednesday.

Noting the heartbreaking “recent tragedy in our community,” Duxbury Public Schools has shared resources for children and adults who need help. A spokesperson for Massachusetts General Hospital confirmed that Clancy is an employee and said the organization is “shocked and saddened to learn of this unthinkable tragedy.”

Police called to Summer Street in Duxbury, children rushed to hospital

Duxbury police were initially called to the house on Summer Street around 6:11 p.m. by a man who lived there, later revealed to be Clancy’s husband, to report the woman’s suicide attempt, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said.

When police and firefighters arrived, Cruise said they found the woman along with three children under the age of 5 who were unconscious and showing obvious signs of injury. A preliminary investigation into the death of the two older children showed that they died of strangulation.

The woman allegedly cut herself and jumped out of a window in a suicide attempt. Cruz did not want to speculate about any mental health issues the woman may have been dealing with, but noted at a press conference on Wednesday that prosecutors are looking into all possible motives.

According to Cruz, the two older children died in the hospital. The baby, 7 months old (originally said to be 8 months old by officials), was flown by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital for treatment.

Cruz was asked Wednesday if the child was harmed in the strangulation attempt, but the district attorney did not elaborate, except that “there is certainly evidence of harm to the child.”

Active police investigation

On Wednesday, Cruz stressed that the investigation was ongoing around the clock and is still ongoing. The police remained at the house on Wednesday morning.

Authorities noted that the incident was not considered accidental and did not pose a risk to other members of the community.

Investigators said Tuesday evening that three young children were found unconscious, two of whom died in a hospital at a house in Duxbury where a woman had been hospitalized following a suicide attempt.

Cruz said the state medical examiner’s office was working to determine the cause and nature of the children’s deaths.

Community reaction

Neighbors and the rest of the Duxbury community couldn’t believe it, wondering what led to the tragedy.

“I heard the news say, ‘Oh my God. Devastating news, devastating,” said Regina Mitchell, who lives across the street from the crime scene.

“Hearing about it is simple, it’s just a tragedy,” added Duxbury resident Bryce Lehner.

“It’s scary to even think about it,” neighbor Bernadette McPartland said. “I can’t even go anywhere with this.”

“You don’t know what’s going on in her poor head,” Mitchell said of her mother. “She might have gone through some tough things after having a baby.”

Massachusetts General Hospital confirmed on Wednesday that the woman involved is one of their employees.

“We are shocked and saddened to learn of this unthinkable tragedy. We express our deepest condolences to all those affected by these devastating events,” the statement said.
