A Houston woman uses Instagram to advertise businesses linked to government fraud schemes, according to the Justice Department.

HOUSTON — A 22-year-old Houston woman has confessed to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, US Attorney’s Office said Monday.

From March 2020 to December of that year, Desiree Coleman conspired with others to commit wire fraud by filing false public aid applications, officials said. In addition, Coleman is accused of instructing others on how to cheat government programs and applying for others using false representations.

She charged a fee for every fraudulent application she filed.

Coleman used the internet to carry out scams and advertised her services through her Instagram stories. Most of Coleman’s conversations about FEMA and the unemployment scams were through private messages on Instagram, authorities said. Her Instagram page had about 3,000 followers.

The U.S. District Judge accepted the application and set the verdict for May 1.

At the time, Coleman faces up to five years in federal prison, as well as a possible maximum fine of $250,000.

Coleman was allowed to remain on bail until the hearing.
