A father and 4-year-old son are among five killed in a house fire in Rockland County.

On Tuesday, officials said a father and his 4-year-old son were among five people killed in a house fire in Rockland County over the weekend that also killed a 13-year-old boy.

The fire killed two boys and three adults and injured five others. All the victims were relatives and came from Guatemala, according to The Journal News, citing representatives of the Guatemalan consulate.

The fire, which broke out late Saturday in the village of Spring Valley, is believed to have been caused by electrical problems and an accident, county officials said.

The fire killed 27-year-old Rudy Alfonso Climaco Interiano and his 4-year-old son Darwin Isai Climaco Diaz.

Also killed was 13-year-old schoolboy Carlos Anibal Interiano Gonzalez, whose father was injured in the fire.

Died cousin Rudy Climaco, 34-year-old Anastasio Diaz Climaco, and 29-year-old Maria del Carmen Gonzalez Cuizar.

Among the survivors were Rudy’s partner Alfonso Climaco Interiano, who was the mother of little Darwin, and the couple’s youngest daughter, according to the newspaper.

The consulate said the country’s adult status was “an illegal migration situation,” according to The Journal News, even though Darwin and his surviving sister were citizens because they were born in the US.

A two-story apartment building was almost completely blackened after a fire, about half of the roof collapsed. The flames were so intense that firefighters were unable to enter the house to help the trapped people until the flames were extinguished.

The building was overturned hours after the fire, according to The Journal News.

The five people who were taken to hospital after the fire were released by Monday, an aide to the Rockland County Executive told the newspaper.

Rockland County Sheriff Louis Falco said on Tuesday that although the exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, “it was most likely accidental and related to electrical problems in the building.”

According to him, smoke detectors have been installed in the apartment building.

A joint investigation of the fire by the Sheriff and the Spring Valley Police Department is ongoing.

The county received five past complaints from 2015 to 2021 related to the burned house, officials said, but all of those issues were resolved by August 2021. Some of the problems included pests and a lack of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

There have been no complaints since 2021. The property has changed hands twice since officials last visited this year, according to the county.
