A cyclist recovers after being nearly killed after being hit by a car in East Austin.

A cyclist who was nearly hit by a runaway driver in East Austin is recovering from brain surgery.

“My brother went to work, he always rode a bike,” said Travis Davis.

Cody Davis, 37, was almost at work when he was hit by a car on Waller Street near East 4th Street around 6 p.m. Friday.

“Hit him and go,” said Travis Davis.

“I didn’t care about the stops or anything like that,” said Enrique Hernandez, Cody Davis’ manager.

Davis was able to walk a couple of hundred feet to the Japanese barbecue restaurant where he works.

“We went into the office, sat him down a bit, I brought him an ice pack,” Hernandez said.

He seemed fine at first, but Hernandez said Davis began to sweat, slur and struggle to walk.

“It just keeps getting worse and worse. It’s not just a regular cut on his head,” Hernandez said.

Hernandez called 911 and Davis was rushed to Dell Seton Medical Center, where doctors quickly discovered he had a severe head injury.

“Got a call from the hospital,” Travis Davis said. “They didn’t think he would have surgery.”

But Davis survived after part of his skull was removed and 83 braces were inserted into his head.

We talked to his brother, who is in Georgia.

“Today he does not sleep. He talks. He has problems with short-term memory. He does not remember the phone that we used during the day. I do not remember being beaten,” said Travis Davis. “He remembers almost nothing after the accident” .

Travis Davis says he’s sick of what happened to someone so kind and generous.

“He is one of those who will give you his shirt from the back,” said Travis Davis.

“He’s a great guy,” Hernandez said. “He’s very open, very honest.”

“He cares about the environment, so he rides a bike,” said Travis Davis.

Relatives created a GoFundMe for Cody Davis, who has no health insurance and has just settled in Austin after moving from Hawaii last year.

“He still loves Texas. He doesn’t want to leave Texas now, even after all this,” said Travis Davis.

Travis Davis says his brother is worried about money and afraid he might have to give up his two beloved dogs.

“Money really matters a lot. I also donated everything I could,” Hernandez said.

“Prayer is what we really need,” said Travis Davis.

As for the suspect, those close to Cody Davis are hoping the cameras in the area will provide some clues or that the driver will change his mind.

“Leaving someone to die is kind of heartless. And the least you could do was stop and check on my brother,” he said.

If you saw the accident occur or have any information about the vehicle or driver, you are strongly advised to contact the Austin Police. You can report anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 is available for any information leading to an arrest.
