BEAUMONT, Texas. A Beaumont Sonic employee not only serves cocktails and fries, but also brings smiles and contagious energy.

David Chansey, also known as “Carhop Dave”, is quickly becoming a favorite among Southeast Texans.

Chansey works at Sonic on N. 23rd Street and Phelan Blvd.

Recently, a regular customer tipped him $1,000 after seeing him walk to work one day.

“I redirected myself because of his attitude. You start the day off, you want to have a good attitude and he’s funny and with that I come here for great customer service,” said Kelly Hinson.

The regulars don’t even press the button, Chancey already knows their order.

“It’s really easy when I meet the same people over and over every day, I see a name, I joke around with them here and there just to get to know them,” Chansey said.

Chansey is a 38-year-old single father of two boys. For the past three years he has worked for Sonic on 23rd and Phelan.

His shift usually starts at 7 am, but one day one of his regulars noticed that he was not at work.

“I asked the lady, I said I wasn’t trying to be nosy or anything but if he lived nearby, I saw him walking to work and she said, ‘Yes, he has a newborn and he He works very hard, he’s trying to get a vehicle,” Hinson said.

Hearing this, Hinson knew what she had to do.

She had recently divorced and was ready to part with her wedding rings.

Hinson hoped to use the money to help Chancey.

“Unfortunately, the jewelry store only wanted a store loan, so I came back here the next day and I got paid the same day and I gave him $1,000 in cash from my own pocket,” Hinson said.

For Chansey, it was the advice of a lifetime.

“I immediately went inside and thought you guys are here with me every day, and I took 100 pieces and distributed to the people on the team with me,” he said.

Those who have met him know that he is more than just a waiter.

“Never be afraid to make someone smile, because every day it goes a long way,” Chancey said.

Chansey says he used part of the tip he left to pay some bills, and he hopes to use his income taxes to buy a car.

He’s just looking for a good enough car to get to and from work.
