A backstage tour of ISD Production Studios in Dallas designed to broaden students’ horizons.

Lights, camera, action for Dallas Independent School District students on a tour of the district’s production studios at the Dallas ISD headquarters in Dallas.

“This is our studio where all the magic happens,” said Onesimo Hernandez, a wide-eyed third-grade Montessori teacher.

“Wow!” exclaimed third grader Maria Villarreal.

The students took turns standing behind and in front of the cameras in the studio. They also learned about editing, lighting and audio production.

“I thought it was easy when we watched the video, but now it seems very difficult. For example, this camera has a lot of buttons,” said Villarreal. “It’s really cool, like being a photographer or looking at cameras and filming people.”

“I didn’t want to leave the room, I’m having so much fun,” third grader Kerry Ranson said in the recording room. “I want to do this and then I want to edit because you can add fun sounds!”

The students learned that staged stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end…just like the books they read in class. So they applied the core curriculum, just in a different way.

“Well, I like it because it shows them a different point of view,” said teacher Juan Jimenez. “We prepare students for college, so I hope this is where they learn how to prepare for college, study hard and get a good job.”

The goal was to open up opportunities for their future careers.
