51-year-old cyclist dies in crash while trying to cross street in DeLand

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida. A 51-year-old Lake Helen man died Wednesday in an accident in DeLand after trying to cross the road on his bike, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 6:38 p.m. on East International Speedway Boulevard and North Kepler Road, police said.

The cyclist was traveling north on North Kepler Road, approaching the East International Speedway Boulevard junction, according to FHP.

The cyclist entered the intersection outside the pedestrian crossing at a red traffic light, although an oncoming SUV heading west along the boulevard passed when the light turned green, the military said.

As a result, the SUV hit the cyclist, follows from the accident report.

The cyclist died at the scene, but the SUV driver was not injured, police said.

The crash is still under investigation.
